Motion Control – The Mars helicopter made history – with maxon’s precision motors!

Motion Control – Mars helicopter has maxon’s motors!

Space fans are thrilled: NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has successfully completed its pioneering flight on Mars. This is the first time in the history of powered, unmanned spaceflight that a device has flown in a controlled manner on another planet.

motion control - mars helicopter

motion control - maxonTaunton, MA — Motion Control Products – A short flight for “Ingenuity,” but a big success for unmanned space flight. NASA’s Mars helicopter flew over the surface of the Red Planet for about 40 seconds on Monday, April 19th and landed back on four legs. From NASA’s perspective, this is a historic event similar to the Wright brothers’ first controlled flight in 1903.

With the Mars helicopter, the concept of powered, unmanned, and autonomous flights on foreign planets is being tested. This is comparable to the first Mars rover “Sojourner”, which paved the way for scientific follow-up missions such as “Curiosity” and currently “Perseverance”. “Ingenuity” is about to complete several flights over a period of 30 days, each lasting up to 90 seconds and reaching a maximum altitude of five meters.

Motion Control – e-road bikes and e-MTBs!

Italian premium road bike manufacturer, Cipollini and Swiss bike manufacturer, TRANSALPES launch their new lightweight e-bikes with the maxon BIKEDRIVE AIR

motion control - application

motion control - maxon motorsTaunton, MA — Motion Control Products – The Cipollini Flusso is a performance e-road bike that weighs only 10.7 kg. With a weight of less than 16 kg, the TRANSALPES E1 sets standards in the electrified trail and enduro segment. Both e-bikes put a natural feel at the center of the riding experience.

There is an emerging trend in the e-bike market towards lightweight systems that are almost indistinguishable from standard bicycles. This development is supported by smaller, more powerful motors and improved battery technologies. “Integration is the key word,” says Michele Tittonel, R&D Coordinator at Cipollini. “The second generation of e-race bikes will be powered by electric motors fully integrated into the bike design and complemented with high-end components.”

Cipollini set out to develop one of the lightest e-race bikes in the world without compromising reliability and duration of assistance. Now the Italian bike manufacturer is introducing the new Flusso, which weighs just 10.7 kg

The Cipollini Flusso is equipped with maxon’s BIKEDRIVE Air system, which weighs just 3.5 kilograms including the battery. At its heart is a mid-mounted motor that delivers 30 Nm of torque. Thanks to a special free-wheel technology it’s easy to pedal even without electric assistance. Michele Tittonel says, “The natural feeling of riding is absolutely crucial; after all, physical effort should remain part of the experience.”

motion control - maxon application

Integration of the drive is also a top priority for the Swiss bike manufacturer TRANSALPES. “With the BIKEDRIVE AIR system from maxon, we want to build perhaps the lightest e-bike for demanding mountain bikers,” as co-owner Michel Juhasz explains. “The new TRANSALPES E1 rides as naturally as a mountain bike without a motor.” TRANSALPES’ lightest e-bike, with a carbon frame, weighs less than 16 kg.

The Cipollini e-road bikes and TRANSALPES e-MTBs can be configured and pre-ordered on the manufacturers’ websites.

Automation Motion Control – IncOder™ Inductive Angle Encoder by Zettlex available from Electromate!

Automation Motion Control – Inductive Angle Encoder by Zettlex!

automation motion control encoders

motion control - electromate logo

Vaughan, Ontario, Canada — Automation Motion Control – Zettlex position sensors (IncOders) use non-contact, inductive technology for precision angle measurement. Rather than the bulky transformers of traditional inductive sensors, Zettlex sensors use printed circuits. This enables compact, accurate, lightweight and robust position sensors with no contacts, no delicate parts, no maintenance, no hassle – just accurate measurements – all day, every day. IncOders are ideally suited to harsh environments – where potentiometers, optical or capacitive devices may prove unreliable.

IncOders have 2 main parts – a Stator and a Rotor – each shaped like a flat ring. The large bore makes it easy to accommodate through-shafts, slip-rings, optical-fibres, pipes or cables. The Stator is powered and the Rotor is passive. The Stator contains the electronics to receive power and generate an output signal. The output signal from the Stator shows the true absolute angular position of the Rotor relative to the Stator without the need of any motion.

IncOder inductive angle encoders do not require compliant or special couplings and the Rotor & Stator can simply be screwed to the host product. Precise mechanical mounting is not required and there are no bearings. Whereas optical or capacitive angle encoders can be unreliable in harsh conditions – notably with condensation or dust – Zettlex angle encoders are generally unaffected by foreign matter and IP67 rated versions are available.

Unlike capacitive devices, there is no need to earth the Rotor or Stator. Robust, hard-anodized aluminium alloy housings and monolithic constructions are used throughout. There are no contacting, delicate or wearing parts, so there is no need for periodic replacement, service or maintenance. In other words, IncOder angle encoders are true ‘fit and forget’ devices.

Features include:

  • Robust Angular Position Measurement for Extreme Environments
  • High-reliability Inductive Angle Encoder Technology
  • Simple installation; ‘fit and forget’ technology
  • Non-contact technology for high reliability in extreme environments
  • Proven in Aerospace, Defense, Medical & Industrial applications
  • Over 4 million product configuration options available
