Problem: Move heavy sets on a sound stage smoothly, quickly, and most importantly quietly! Ball screws specified in the original design proved unacceptable due to the limited length of travel, screw deflection which resulted in a lack of smoothness, and high noise levels. A rack and pinion was also considered but the noise level was also too high and there was no room for a gearbox. Linear motors are quiet however the cost was prohibitive, and a belt system could not handle the heavy loads.

Solution: The new Streamliner Open Screw Drive System from Winner was selected by the production company to move the heavy sets on the sound stage.

Also known as an electric cylinder, this compact direct drive linear motor is just 0.75 in. (19.1 mm) in diameter and 2.75 in (69.9 mm) long.  Protected inside the motor housing, the linear optical quadrature encoder is directly connected to the shaft for the greatest possible accuracy.

Highest throughputs are achieved by the SDLM-019-070-01-01 linear motor when operating at peak efficiency monitoring the data from the internal temperature sensor.

The SDLM-019-070-01-01 direct drive linear motor has a stroke length of 0.500 in. (12.7 mm) and a continuous force rating of 7.3 oz. Understanding the Basics of a Voice Coil Actuator

 

A voice coil actuator, also known as a non-commutated DC linear actuator, is a type of direct drive linear motor.  The name “voice coil” comes from one of its historically first applications: vibrating the paper cone of a loudspeaker.  They are currently used for a wide range of applications, including moving much larger masses.  It consists of a permanent magnetic field assembly (permanent magnets and ferrous steel) and a coil assembly.  The current flowing through the coil assembly interacts with the permanent magnetic field and generates a force vector perpendicular to the direction of the current.  The force vector can be reversed by changing the polarity of current flowing through the coil.

A non-commutated DC linear actuator, typically referred to as a voice coil, is capable of a displacement of up to 5 inches, whereas most actuators have displacements up to 2 inches.  Voice coils come in a range of sizes, from devices that generate a few ounces of force, to others that generate several hundred pounds of force.  In addition, voice coil actuators can move bi-directionally, have a constant force over the stroke, and can be used for either open loop applications or closed loop position or force applications.

A voice coil actuator generates a force based on an interaction of current carrying conductors in a permanent magnetic field.  The force generated by the voice coil is proportional to the cross product of the current flowing through the coil and the magnetic flux in the permanent magnetic field, as dictated by Lorentz’ force equation:

F = B x I

I = Current (Amps)

The force generated is relatively constant throughout the stroke of the actuator, with minor decreases in force at the beginning and end of the stroke.

Either the coil assembly or permanent magnetic field assembly can be used as the moving member in a voice coil actuator.

Moving Coil

Voice coil actuators come in a variety of packages.  The standard type, which most people are familiar with are moving coil type actuators.  These typically involve a coil wound around a bobbin, which can be made from many non-magnetic materials, which moves in and out of a permanent magnetic field assembly consisting of a steel housing with a concentric permanent magnet assembly in the middle.  A typical example can be found below:

Moving Magnet

Another common type of actuator would be the moving magnet design, where the coil is fixed and magnet assembly moves.  This construction change would prevent moving leads during operation.  The package operates similarly, but instead of an exposed coil that moves in and out of the magnet assembly, the moving magnet style utilizes a permanent magnetic field assembly “piston” moving inside a cylindrical coil tube.  This style often comes with the permanent field assembly attached to a shaft, and end caps containing bearings so that this style is most commonly supplied with an integrated bearing system.  A typical example can be found below:

There are variations on both common designs of either actuator design that allow for unique geometry, and the integration of voice coil actuators into several applications.

A few examples of customizations available are:

  • Large radial clearances so that the voice coil can be used in limited rotation applications
  • Designs that intentionally operate the voice coil motor in an arc (commonly referred to as a rotary voice coil actuator)
  • Using low outgassing materials to enable use in vacuum environments
  • Integration of feedback devices for closed loop control

Voice coil actuators are typically used in focusing applications, oscillatory systems, mirror tilting, and miniature position control.

H2W has built its smallest moving magnet voice coil actuator (NCM01-04-001-2IB) to date, with an outside diameter of 0.40 in [10 mm] and a length of 0.735 in [18.8 mm]. It has a stroke of 0.10 in [2.5 mm] and generates a continuous force of 0.10 lbs [0.45 N] and a peak force of 0.30 lbs [1.35 N]. It weighs just 0.20 ounces [5.7 grams]. This actuator utilizes a hardened shaft and sliding contact bushing to ensure long life, and is ideal for oscillatory motion. The compact design allows the actuator to be used in a number of handheld applications. Moving magnet voice coil actuators have built-in bearings so there is no need for the customer to add mass or complexity to their motion system to integrate a bearing, and there are no moving leads to worry about cable management.

Our smallest moving coil voice coil actuator (NCC01-04-001-1X) has an outside diameter of 0.44 in [11.1 mm] and a length of 0.36 in [9 mm]. It has a stroke of 0.13 in [3.2 mm] and generates a continuous force of 0.06 lbs [0.27 N] and a peak force of 0.18 lbs [0.8 N]. It weighs just 0.20 ounces [5.7 grams]. The bobbin has been constructed of plastic to prevent any damping forces that a metallic bobbin would create. The compact design allows the actuator to be used in a number of handheld applications.

San Luis Obispo, CA – The motion control TA333 High Power Linear Drive is the newest addition to the Trust Automation line of high performance drives. The TA333 drive features a true Class-AB linear amplifier with pure analog throughput at currents up to 25A. Highly configurable, the drive can be used with a brushless motor using external sinusoidal commutation, with an internally commutated brushless motor with Hall Effect sensor feedback for smooth trapezoidal operation, a 2-phase stepper motor, or up to two voice coil motors. The drive is ideal for applications such as: “very high resolution” inspection systems, metrology instruments, and medical applications.

The TA333 linear drive is ideal for overcoming issues such as high inertia mismatched stages and low inductance motors. It is easily configured for three-phase DC brushless servo motors using Hall Effect sensors, three-phase AC brushless motors using external sinusoidal commutation, single-phase DC brushed servo motors in bridged mode, brushless linear motors and voice coil linear actuators. This flexibility allows motion system designers to easily integrate the latest developments in sinusoidal motor control and its benefits of zero cogging, no torque ripple, and smooth motion.

For applications requiring extremely low electrical noise the TA333 linear drive utilizes an external 24 VDC source of power for the internal logic. For applications, which are not as sensitive to electrical noise, an internal 24 VDC source can be used. The very low electrical noise of the TA333 linear drive makes it ideal for integration in or near systems that have noise sensitive circuitry, such as transducers and sensors. Also the audible noise problems associated with PWM Drives are eliminated and the typical hall “ticking” noise associated with Trapezoidal commutation is greatly reduced.

This powerful ±100 Volt, 25 Amp peak linear drive can be configured to interface with any motion controller with a ±10 VDC command output. High performance sinusoidal commutation systems require a motion controller with the capability to generate two ±10 VDC command signals. The third command signal is generated by the drive to maintain the highest level of precision. The TA333 can be set up to operate in trapezoidal mode using Hall Effect sensors as feedback. The drive also features DTS (Dynamic Transconductance Selection) control, which allows the transconductance (torque control) to be changed on-the-fly allowing very high resolution control without sacrificing power for resolution capability.

Compact, measuring just 14.9 in. (37.9 mm) X 7.7 (19.5 mm) X 4.7 (11.9 mm), the TA333 has integral thermally controlled variable speed forced air cooling, a housing designed to protect against operator injury, easily made connections using ribbon connectors, SMB coaxial connectors, and pluggable-terminal connectors, all demonstrating Trust Automation’s commitment to operator safety, quiet environment, and ease of integration.
