Motion Control – Maxon drives are heading to the Red Planet with NASA’s Perseverance Rover!

Motion Control – Application – Maxon drives heading to the Red Planet!

In July, NASA will be sending its fifth rover to Mars. Its main mission is to collect soil samples that will be analyzed on Earth at a later time. The rover will also carry a helicopter that will perform the first flights on the Red Planet. maxon’s precision DC and BLDC motors will be used for numerous mission-critical tasks.

motion control - maxon motors

motion control - maxon motorTaunton, MA — Motion Control Products & Application – maxon drive systems are very familiar with Mars. Our drives have been used in virtually every successful robotic mission over the last three decades. There are now more than 100 of them on the Red Planet and there are likely to be more soon. The launch window for NASA’s next mission opens on July 22nd. An Atlas V rocket will launch the new Perseverance rover on its way to Mars, where it will be searching for signs of previous life on the planet. Its most important job is to take multiple soil samples, seal them in containers and deposit them on the surface of Mars so that a future mission can return them to Earth. Several maxon motors will be used to handle the samples inside the rover. For example, maxon DC motors are installed in the robotic arm, which moves the samples from station to station. Maxon motors will also be used for sealing and depositing the sample containers.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), is carrying out the mission, and have asked maxon to produce 10 drives for the rover. As with almost all previous Mars missions, these drives are based on standard products from maxon’s catalog with modifications. For the first time, NASA is using brushless DC motors, including: nine EC 32 flat and one EC 20 flat in combination with a GP 22 UP planetary gearhead. Working closely with JPL specialists, maxon engineers developed the drives over several years and tested them thoroughly to achieve the highest standards of quality. “We’ve learned a lot from this exciting project,” says Robin Phillips, head of the maxon SpaceLab. “We now have very broad expertise in space applications and have established quality assurance processes that meet the expectations of the industry. Customers from other industries such as the medical sector, where requirements are often similar, can also benefit from this know-how.”  Space missions place the highest demands on drive systems. This includes vibrations during the rocket launch, vacuum during the journey, impacts on landing, and the harsh conditions on the surface of Mars, where temperatures fluctuate between -125 and +20 degrees Celsius and dust penetrates everywhere

Maxon DC motors control the Mars helicopter.

motion control - maxon mars motor

The Perseverance rover is expected to land on Mars on February 18, 2021 – but it won’t be alone. A drone helicopter called Ingenuity will be attached to the underside of the rover. It weighs 1.8 kilograms, is solar powered and will perform several short flights, as well as take aerial images. The main goal of this experiment is to test the concept for further drones of this kind. maxon has six brushed DCX motors with a diameter of 10 millimeters controlling the tilt of the rotor blades and the direction of flight. The drives are very light, dynamic and highly energy-efficient. These properties are crucial, because every gram counts on the Mars helicopter. Flying on Mars is not easy. The atmosphere is extremely thin, roughly comparable to the conditions on Earth at an altitude of 30 kilometers. The drone helicopter has flown in a simulated test environment in the JPL laboratory. Whether it will lift off on Mars remains to be seen. First, other obstacles, such as the rocket launch, must be successful. “We hope that everything goes well and that we’ll soon see our drives in action on Mars,” says maxon CEO Eugen Elmiger. “We’re all keeping our fingers crossed.”

Miniature Linear Focus Actuator Features <50 Nanometer Positioning Resolution!

Motion Control – Miniature Linear Focus Actuator

Motion Control- Linear Focus Actuator

LFA-1007 Linear Focus Actuator: 10mm clear aperture, 7mm range of motion, <50 nanometer positioning resolution, 50 grams moving mass, 70 x 70 x 50 (600g)

motion control - equipment solutions

Forestville, CA — Motion Control Linear Focus Actuator – The LFA-1007 is a high performance compact positioning actuator. It was specifically developed for applications requiring both high precision and high-speed positioning over a short to medium stroke. This product mates the voice coil motor to a perfectly smooth flexure guidance system and a very high resolution position feedback encoder. The LFA is well suited for optical focusing and other micro-positioning applications in markets such as semiconductor, medical, optical testing, scanning microscopy, circuit board assembly and micro manufacturing. The LFA-1007 has a 10 mm diameter clear aperture through its center, and 7mm of available stroke. Different configurations of stroke length, force constant, optic mounting, and other options are available as needed. The LFA1007 come stock with either a c-mount thread or a 12.7 mm diameter lens socket. Other threaded holes also exist.

motion control linear focus actuator and amplifier

Voice Coil Motor: The motor used in the LFA is a custom designed moving coil motor optimized using advanced computer modeling. The magnets used in Equipment Solutions motors have some of the highest magnetic flux densities available. Its coil characteristics, including the resistance and inductance, were closely designed to match the capabilities of the SCA814 Servo Controlled Amplifier. The motor can drive the stage to unparalleled accelerations and peak velocities.

Flexure Stage Guidance: The LFA series uses flexures for guidance along the motion axis. Flexures provide perfectly smooth motion. When designed and used properly they can have infinite lifetime. The LFA flexure and motor configuration is symmetric about a central axis where an optic is usually mounted. The resultant optical axis is coaxial with the motion axis of the flexure and the force vector of the motor, and this axis passes through the center of mass of the moving system, thus producing no net torque. The LFA flexure is stiff in all 5 cross-axes to the motion axis, except there is a small parasitic rotation about the motion axis that is proportional to the position on the motion axis. This parasitic motion is inherent in flexure systems, but which axis is left to the choice of the designer. ESI chose the parasitic axis to be a rotation about the motion axis that doesn’t affect the intended application for most customers. Most LFAs are used in optical applications where a rotation of the optic about the optical axis is not an issue.

motion control - miniature linear focus actuator

Position Feedback: In its standard configuration the LFA uses a non-contact optical analog position encoder that makes it directly compatible with the SCA814 Servo Controlled Amplifier. The 50 nanometer positioning repeatability described in the specifications section assumes this sensor technology. The analog nature of the position sensor promotes the exceptionally high positioning resolution and bandwidth. For compatibility with digital servo systems the LFA can be optionally configured with a digital quadrature encoder.

Motion Control – Linear Servo Controller for Non-Commutated Motor from Equipment Soultions!

Motion Control – Linear Servo Controller

motion control - Servo Control Amplifier

Equipment Soultions

Forestville, CA, – Motion Control – The SCA814 Linear Servo Controller was specifically designed to control single phase, non-comutated devices like voice coil motors. like it’s field proven predecessor the SCA754 is a high performance single axis DC motor controller and amplifier system. It is comprised of a highly integrated single PC board level product with a cohesive interface. This card provides current amplification and analog servo control interfaces. The single-phase characteristic of the current amplifier makes it particularly well suited for DC motors such as galvanometers and voice coils. It was specifically developed for control of motor applications requiring both high temporal and spatial servo precision, such as machine vision, inspection, scientific imaging, medical imaging and other business applications. This amplifier interfaces directly to many of the Equipment Solution motor/stage solutions.

Besides galvanometers the SCA814 is directly compatible with all the ESI linear voice coil stages and the optical scanners. A bipolar linear or switching regulated power supply is required by the SCA814 amplifier. Typically better performance can be achieved when using a linear power supply. Equipment Solutions has several high-current supplies for this purpose including the SPS15 ±15V DC Switching Power Supply.

Motion Control – Compact, High Resolution Resonant Scanner Features Wide Frequency Range and Fully Integrated Control & Drive Electronics!

Motion Control – Resonant Scanner

motion control resonant scanner

Equipment Soultions

Forestville, CA — The RS-25 Resonant Scanner from Equipment Solutions is optimized for applications that typically require a means to scan an optical beam. This motion control resonant scanner is a very efficient means of oscillating or vibrating a mirror or similar load at a fixed frequency. Up to a 25 mm diameter mirror can be set at the factory to oscillate at a fixed frequency of 20 Hz to 550 Hz, and mirror sweep can be adjusted to a total of 90 degrees optical. The very compact RS-25 Resonant Scanner measurers just 25 x 58 x 21 mm and all electronics necessary to control and drive the scanner are fully integrated. Typical applications include: 3D laser digitizing & measurement, printing, raster scanners, laser projectors, laser marking, laser range finding, barcode scanning, confocal microscopy, FLIR, retinal image acquisition, semiconductor inspection, laser tuning, and biological and medical research.

The RS-25 Resonant Scanner can optionally be configured with a very high-resolution position sensor. This non-contact electro-optic sensor provides a means to directly monitor the angular position of the user’s load with micro-radian scale resolution and repeatability. The sensor naturally produces an analog signal proportional to position and is noise limited, however, options include a high-resolution 16-bit Analog-to-Digital converter to quickly sample and report the mirror position (up to 1500 samples-per-second) at any time.

Unparalleled performance and reliability have been achieved through a continuous and careful attention to every design detail. This relentless drive has generated patent pending concepts and ideas that distinguish the RS-25 Resonant Scanner. The RS-25 Resonant Scanner has a virtually unlimited life. Carefully designed flexures mimic a conventional spring-mass harmonic motion system, and a small voice coil motor coupled to the system compensates for small system loses that would otherwise dampen the oscillation.

Two connectors are accessible from the side of the unit. One, a mini USB connector, supports high speed USB communications and power sourcing. The second connector provides electrical control and signal interfaces (e.g. analog amplitude control and feedback (e.g.) mirror position).

Additional features include: Very low power drive electronics (low heat emission), vertical or horizontal mounting, high frequency stability (to 0.05%), broad frequency selection, no wearing parts, shock and vibration tolerant.

Equipment Solutions, Inc. (ESI) is a provider of engineering and manufacturing services. ESI specializes in the design and production of automation and instrumentation products including motion control components and sub systems. ESI’s products range from galvanometer amplifiers with an integrated arbitrary waveform generator, to high-resolution displacement sensors, voice coil and stepper motor stages, amplifiers and controllers.
