When a design engineer has fully defined a linear-motion application’s requirements regarding travel length, speed, force, and accuracy as well as repeatability, the next question to answer is this:

Does an off-the-shelf linear slide (or a stock linear slide from a catalog) fully satisfy the application?

Off-the-shelf linear slides are advantageous for their quick delivery and lower cost than that of custom components. No wonder most linear-motion designs do in fact employ off-the-shelf linear slides from various component and system suppliers.

Available off-the-shelf in travel lengths of: 600 mm (23.622 in.), 700 mm (27.559 in.), 800 mm (31.496 in.), 900 mm (35.433 in.), and 1000 mm ( 39.370 in.), these stages are available with either a Two-Phase Stepper Motor or with a Three-Phase Brushless Motor with a Quadrature Incremental Optical Encoder.

Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control – H2W Technologies introduces a high acceleration, voice coil driven, XY positioning stage with a precision bearing system, which minimizes the amount of pitch, yaw, and roll in the system. The voice coil stage (VCS06-010-BS-01-MXY) is a closed loop positioning system that can be used for positioning applications. The stage utilizes a custom low-profile design that utilizes a unique electromagnetic circuit design. The motor has a two-axis planar coil assembly that interacts with a common magnetic circuit. This circuit design allows for a minimal overall height of 2.085 inches [53 mm]. Each axis has a 0.62″ [15.8 mm] stroke; generate 0.75 lbs [3.3 N] of continuous force and 2.25 lbs [10 N] of peak force.

Each axis is guided by precision linear ball slide assemblies. It includes a one-micron resolution magnetic linear encoder on each axis. This design utilizes a moving coil, which has a lower moving mass that enables the highest possible acceleration. Voice coil positioning stages are ideal for applications that require quick, short moves with fast settling times.

A key feature of this stage is that all motors, cable carriers and controller are integrated inside the unit, making this ideal for space saving motion applications. Additionally, due to the integrated controller, all electronics including motor drives are packaged completely inside; communication is simple though a universal USB interface.

Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control – The VCS15-050-AB-LV-2 is a closed loop single plane dual axis positioning stage with air bearings. This stage is ideal for low velocity ripple positioning applications that require independent multiple motions on a single travel plane. It uses H2W voice coil motor NCC15-24-050-1R. Each voice coil has a 1.50″ [38.1 mm] stroke; generates 8.4 lbs [37.4 N] of continuous force and 25.2 lbs [112 N] of peak force. The LVDT allows for accurate positioning.

It comes supplied with a non-contact air bearing (air bushing) which minimizes the amount of friction as well as the pitch, yaw, and roll in the system. The motor coil is the moving part of the assembly in order to reduce the moving mass of the system. Power is supplied to the motor via a high flex, high reliability flat ribbon cable. The voice coil motors have been mounted centered and over the bearing assembly in order to reduce the overall width and length of the system.

These are high precision linear stage with 160mm width and driven by modern piezo technology. The linear stages of the PMT series are optimized especially for use in the metrology world. Outstanding low deviations from straightness and flatness as well as high system accuracies characterize these stages. In the design of the PMT series we paid particular attention to flexibility. For an optimum motion system solution, controllers are offered to meet the sophisticated application criteria. The FMC series controllers are available as table-top, DIN-rail mount or 19″ rack versions for industrial applications.

There are 7 models in this series. Travels range from 50mm to 250mm, unidirection repeatability is as low as +/- 0.3 µm, accuracy +/- 1.5 µm, and resolution is +/- 0.1µm. The maximum speed of all in this series is 250 mm/sec. and 2 acceleration is 2 m/s2.

Santa Clarita, CA —– Linear Motion – H2W introduces its latest custom XY voice coil positioning stage (VCS08-700-08/350-AB-01-MC-XY) which is guided by precision air bearings. This minimizes the amount of friction and reduces the pitch, yaw, and roll in the system. The stage is driven by three NCC series moving coil type linear actuators which are guided by parallel air bearing shafts. It is operated under closed loop position control. This system was designed specifically for an accelerometer testing application.

It includes a 1 micron resolution linear encoder on each linear motion axis and is ideal for high force low velocity ripple positioning applications. Each voice coil has a 0.80 in [20.3 mm] stroke; generate 35 lbs [159 N] of continuous force and 105 lbs [477 N] of peak force, or a combined 70 lbs [318 N] continuous force and 210 lbs [953 N] of peak force on the bottom axis. Voice coil positioning stages are ideal for applications that require quick, short moves with fast settling times.
