Motion Control – Maxon’s High-Performance MAXPOS 50/5 Controller!

Motion Control- Maxon motor launches the MAXPOS 50/5. This compact EtherCAT Slave unveils unprecedented possibilities as far as precision, dynamics, and synchronization are concerned. It also ensures reliability and durability even under harsh conditions. More than 20 years of experience in motion control have been incorporated into this latest technology in positioning controller.

Maxon motion control MAXPOS Controller

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Controller – By their design, the ironless maxon DC brushed motors and brushless (maxon EC) motors are ideal for applications demanding high dynamics and longevity. Typical areas are robotics and applications in the medical industry or in specialized machine manufacturing. In the past when particularly high requirements were called for, the controller used or its limited integration capabilities to the master occasionally imposed limitations due to its inability to keep pace with the high dynamics of the motors. With the new MAXPOS 50/5 motion controller, these core motor properties can now be ideally utilized. Thanks to the latest FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) technology, highest control cycle rates can be achieved with minimally short cycle times at the same time. For trajectory planning, sophisticated motion control tasks with a current controller clock speed of 100 kHz and an effective communication cycle time of 100 μs can be achieved with a suitable EtherCAT master. Distributed Clocks Support as well as the endorsement of CoE (CAN Application Layer over EtherCAT) with «Cyclic Synchronous Modes» perfectly suit these purposes. As an alternative, profile-based operating modes for position and velocity are also available. In addition, the outstanding processing power provides field-oriented sinus commutation of brushless motors (maxon EC) up to a speed of 200,000 rpm.

Full connectivity

A multitude of feedback possibilities permit the use of a wide range of permanent magnet-activated DC motors with encoder and brushless motors (maxon EC) with digital Hall sensors and encoders up to 250 Watts. The wide supply voltage range from 10 to 50 VDC and the output power capability of 5 A continuous and 15 A peak current opens a broad application field. Two different encoders can be used simultaneously allowing for dual loop control of the master to compensate for mechanical backlash and elasticity of the drive system. This is ideal for applications with high demand on precision. The spectrum ranges from digital incremental encoders to analog sinus-cosinus incremental encoders up to absolute encoders with SSI, EnDat2.2, or BiSS-C interface. Of course, also galvanically isolated I/Os are on board to enable integration of diverse peripheral components, such as limit or reference switches.

All-around protection and easy operation

The MAXPOS 50/5 positioning controller also comes with extensive protective circuitry against overcurrent, excess temperature, undervoltage and overvoltage, voltage transients, short-circuits in the motor cable as well as loss of feedback signal. Motor and load can be optimally protected with adjustable current limiting.

The newly designed operating concept for the graphical user interface «MAXPOS Studio» together with well-established tools, such as Startup Wizard or automated Regulation Tuning ensures easy and intuitive commissioning. Additional aids include the Diagnostic Wizard for troubleshooting or a freely-configurable data recorder to plot various process data. Plus, to assist the customer in attaining the ideal matched drive system in the shortest possible time, a comprehensive document is provided. The entire configuration can be carried out via USB or Ethernet.

At first glance, Black Racer linear bearings wipe the floor with linear ball bearings. However, linear ball bearings provide the lowest coefficient of friction for mechanical bearings – only surpassed by air bearings. Linear ball bearings are more compliant than sleeve bearings, thus they are more forgiving in applications where shaft parallelism is not exact. Linear ball bearings offer more self-alignment capability than sleeve bearings. Although Black Racer bearings are direct drop-in replacements for inch linear ball bearings, you should call LM76 to ensure your application is a good candidate. Motion Control Automation – EC-4 Pole 32 HD with Planetary Gearhead!

The new maxon EC-4pole 32 HD motor has been designed for extremely rough operating conditions, particularly applications in deep drilling. This 480 W motor can withstand 200 °C, 1000 G, -5000 m and 1700 bar.

Maxon motion control EC32 Hight Temp Motors are Ideal for Deep Hole Drilling

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Automation – Deep drilling technology (called “downhole drilling” in the field of oil and gas exploration) makes it possible to recover oil and gas from depths of more than 2500 m. By combining deep drilling with directional drilling (dynamic position alignment of a bore in the earth), previously unreachable oil reserves are being opened up, with drilling depths of approx. 5000 m and drill lengths of up to 11000 m. The development of specialized electronics and drives has made it possible to better monitor and control many functions across the entire drilling process. For instance, it is now possible to dynamically measure and adjust the position of the drill head during the drilling process. Diverse deep drilling tools also use hydraulic valves or flaps that are operated by electromechanical drives. The temperatures and pressures at these depths, combined with the strong vibrations that occur during the drilling work, present unique challenges for the use of electronic drives.

The different versions of the EC-4pole 32 HD are designed for operation in air or in oil (flooded in hydraulic oil). The power rating depends on the surrounding medium and amounts to 220 W in air and, due to the much higher heat flow, 480 W in oil. They are designed for ambient temperatures of more than 200 °C and atmospheric pressures of up to 1700 bar. The Ø 32 mm motors must also be able to withstand vibrations of up to 25 grms as well as impacts of up to 1000 G (1000 times the acceleration due to gravity at the earth’s surface). As an example, a Formula 1 vehicle is exposed to approximately 2 G and fighter jets are exposed to approximately 13 G. The motors feature high efficiency (up to 89% in air, more than 80% in oil), making them ideal for use in battery-operated applications. With their detent-free running properties, they have excellent control characteristics and are suitable for high-precision positioning tasks in outer space, even at low speeds.

Maxon motion control EC32 Hight Temp Motors are Ideal for Deep Hole Drilling

The EC-4pole 32 HD is ideal for use in environments with extreme temperatures, subject to high vibration, or under ultra-high vacuum. This means the motors can also be used in aerospace applications, e.g. for gas turbine starters, for the generators of jet engines, for regulating combustion engines, or for exploration robots. For the use of the motor in conjunction with a gearhead, maxon offers the GP 32 HD, a powerful and robust planetary gearhead.

Motion Control – Choose Minuteman Linear Bearings When Failure In Adverse Conditions Is NOT An Option!

Motion Control – Minuteman Linear Bearings
motion control - linear bearings

Linear Motion – Why are LM76 Minuteman Linear Bearings™ the 1st choice when failure under poor environmental conditions is simply, “NOT AN OPTION?”   Because Minuteman Self Lube Linear Bearings™ are exceptionally tough and All Weather Compatible!  Unlike linear ball bearings which employ re-circulating balls, LM76 Minuteman Self Lubricating Linear Bearings™ offer a tough ceramic coated shell featuring LM76’s industry leading Minuteman Green Self Lubricating Liner™.

Since there are no balls or mechanical mechanisms in the Minuteman Linear Bearing, there is no mechanical failure mode. Dirt, dust  and debris get wiped away whereas with a linear ball bearing,  they get trapped under the seal, filling the ball raceways and  freezing the balls – destroying the bearing and grooving the shaft.  Minuteman Self Lube Linear Bearing™ can take a pounding  from recoil, shock/vibration, vicious environments and high heat.

Fall River, MA -Motion Control – Maxon’s EPOS3 70/10 EtherCAT easily integrates as slave into real-time EtherCAT protocol-based Ethernet networks. A multitude of operating modes allows efficient, flexible use in a wide range of drive systems in robotics, automation, and mechatronics. The positioning controller supports a broad bandwidth of encoders.

In the typical EtherCAT, the EtherCAT master calculates the trajectory points and sends the target parameters cyclically and synchronous via EtherCAT network to the EPOS3. The corresponding control loops for position, speed, and torque/current take place in the EPOS3 and then delivers the measured actual values (position, speed, current) to the EtherCAT master.

For the actual drive control, the EPOS3 70/10 EtherCAT is equipped with superb motion control functionality. Additional features include speed control with given target velocity to a defined mechanical position using numerous implemented methods is available. The same applies for the generous number of inputs and outputs, which makes the extra EtherCAT I/O module obsolete. Digital inputs/outputs (11/5) can be configured as reference or limit switch as well as Capture or Trigger, or can be used to activate holding brakes with definable ON/OFF switching delays. Additionally, analog inputs/outputs (2/1) are at free disposal. Perfectly tailored for servo motors, the EPOS3 70/10 EtherCAT offers built-in motor filters with motor chokes for EMC-conform operation.

The controller offers comprehensive circuitry against overcurrent, excess temperature, undervoltage and overvoltage, against voltage transients and against short-circuits in the motor cable. Furthermore, it is equipped with adjustable current limitation to protect motor and load as well as protected digital inputs and outputs.

Comprehensive documentation and software are included with every delivery, and are also available for you to download from our website at www.maxonmotor.com.
