Automation – Linear Motion Control Application – LM76 Jet Rail Bearings & Shafting

Linear Motion Control Application – How Would You Position Components Of An Experimental Reactor Vessel Weighing 33 Tons?

Easy … Using Custom made LM76 Jet Rail Bearings and Shafting!

LM76

E. Longmeadow, MA –Linear Motion Control Application – When a privately funded research company was ready to move from their original Proof of Concept to a sustainable fusion reactor to produce clean sustainable energy, they realized that extremely heavy components would need to be assembled and disassembled and reassembled again for design modifications and maintenance. The completed assembly would be the length of two buses and easy alignment of the individual components would be critical.

The main reactor, the fusion containment chamber that is capable of containing a plasma medium of 10 to 15 million degrees is made of non-magnetic stainless steel as are many of the components. The Plasma Medium could be described as a football shaped blob about 1 meter in diameter by 2 meters long. The plasma medium is injected from each end of the reactor assembly by Plasma Guns.

LM76-TAE-Jet-Rail-Bearings-and-Shafting-02-4w

See photo to right – On each end of the assembly is a Plasma Gun. The Plasma Guns as are all the floor lever components, are positioned using LM76 Jet Rail Bearings and shafting. The Jet Rail Bearings and Shafting can be seen near to bottom of the picture.

In addition to the reactor, high energy particle beam generators are positioned at angles to the fusion containment chamber. These particle bean generators form and suspend the plasma medium for an indefinite period of time in the center of the containment chamber. These generators have to be easily positioned – by hand – to accommodate adjustments and re-assembly.

LM76-TAE-Jet-Rail-Bearings-and-Shafting-03

See photo to the left – Neutral-Beam Injectors are positioned around the Reaction Chamber to position and shape the Plasma Medium. These are also moved into position on LM76 Jet Rail Bearings and Shafting.

In addition to supporting the weight of the components, the bearings selected to move these massive loads during the construction and testing of the fusion reactor would have to be non-magnetic. Working with engineers, LM76 developed a custom 3 inch Jet Rail Bearing designed to carry both the weight of the fusion reactor and the high energy particle generators. In addition LM76 supplied precision ground, 3 inch 303 stainless steel (non-magnetic) shafting.

The custom manufactured Jet Rail Roller Blocks and 303 stainless steel shafting simplified the assembly/disassembly of the fusion containment chamber and components while ensuring critical alignment throughout travel.

This breakthrough fusion reactor is still in the experimental stage. A commercially viable reactor would need to contain 100 million degrees. Why is the project so important? Because in addition to producing sustainable energy, its only by-product is, environmentally safe, “helium ash.”.

See photo below – The drawing below shows all the components in place. The assembly is 60 meters long and supported on LM76 jet Rail Bearings and Shafting.

Automation Motion Control – Closed-Loop Integrated Stepper Motors in size NEMA34

Birkerød, Denmark – Automation Motion Control – JVL presents a new innovative closed-loop stepper motor technology for its NEMA34 integrated stepper motor range from 3 to 12 Nm. JVL, the European leader in the development of integrated servo and stepper motor technology, has now again developed a new and unique product in the field of integrated motor control.
New Innovative Technology
JVL closed-loop integrated stepper motors, QuickStep®, provide higher torque, faster acceleration, torque control, stall free operation and quieter movements than traditional step motor systems. QuickStep do this with greater efficiency and less motor heating because motor phase current are regulated up and down according to need. Performance of JVL closed-loop steppers are similar to servo motors, but with higher torque and often without need of gearbox, resulting in a more inexpensive solution. Design safety factors have always been high for stepper motors to ensure stall-free operation – now with QuickStep closed-loop control design can be very close to the limit resulting in even lower costs. QuickStep is a true closed-loop control system that compensates step angle errors during a movement and correct errors within a full step. If load becomes too high speed is lowered and position errors will always stay within two full-steps. Smart digital design and very high update rates (36 MHz) means there is no need of any manual adjustment or setup. It works like a perfect stepper motor benefitting from the servo motor technology.
100% Automatic Setup No need to adjust any parameters. JVL closed-loop stepper motors always work fast and efficient to adapt motor to application. Extremely high update frequency: 36 MHz (where other suppliers have down to only 1 Hz update time). Calculations are made in FPGA and not in slow microprocessors.
Energy Saving Like servo motors QuickStep always runs at lowest possible current. This reduces the need for cooling and results in a more “green” solution.
Stall-Free Operation And No Losing Of Steps By always monitoring the actual rotor position, the control algorithm ensures that the motor does not lose any steps and it cannot stall. If the rotor is blocked mechanically it just continues right away when the obstruction is removed.
Torque Control Mode The torque can be adjusted “on the fly” by the user or by the motor’s embedded PLC program. Applications that were previously impossible for a stepper motor can now be achieved.
Higher Acceleration & Speed Stall-free operation means you do not need to worry about setting the motor to a very high acceleration ramp. The motor simply moves the load with the highest possible acceleration at any given time. The result is a much faster machine with more cycles per day.
Factory Loaded Linearization The motor and encoder are calibrated during factory production in order to reach a very high mechanical precision.
Older Motors Are Supported The Closed-loop control mode is backward compatible with older motors equipped with H2-type encoders. By updating the firmware, the user’s application can benefit from the stall-free operation with very high accelerations and lower power consumption.
Full Torque Available The motor is capable of using the full torque according to the torque-velocity curve and therefore the need to have a safety overhead when dimensioning the machine is much less. Smaller motor = lower costs.
Advantages compared to open loop stepper motors
  • Position feedback and control
  • Fast and easy commissioning. No tuning needed
  • No stalling. No step losses at all
  • Torque control
  • Much faster positioning and more cycles per second
  • Increased efficiency and thereby much lower temperature

Electromate’s New Harmonic Drive Gearhead Website!

Electromate and Harmonic Drive Introduce a New Website!

Motion Control - Electromate-Logo

Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada – Motion Control – Automation – Motion Control – Harmonic Drive® & Electromate have just launched a new joint company website to showcase the latest Harmonic Drive® Gearhead products & technology.

Located at http://electromate.harmonicdrivegearhead.com/, the new website features the following:

Harmonic Drive® gearing utilizes a unique operating principle which is based upon the elastic mechanics of metals. The greatest benefits are the zero-backlash characteristics and the weight and space savings compared to other gears because our gear mechanism consists of only three basic parts. They are the: Wave Generator, Flexspline and Circular Spline.

Harmonic Planetary gears have simultaneous meshing between the sun gear and planet gears and between the planet gears and the internal gear. The sun gear is connected to the motor and a carrier, supporting the planet gears, is connected to the output. Single stage planetary gears can achieve reduction ratios up to 10:1. Ratios above 10:1 utilize a two stage design where the carrier of the first stage drives the sun gear of the second planetary stage.

Automation – POSITAL Sensors, 130,000+ Varieties!

Servo2Go - Motion Control Posital-Encoders

The POSITAL Advantage: Modularity and Mass-Customization

Servo2Go-Logo

Greenville, DE –— Motion Control -Position Sensors – Until now, users of position and motion sensors have had to choose between low-cost standardized products and more expensive custom-built items. For cost-sensitive applications, sensor builders have adopted mass production techniques, building large runs of identical products. The rotation sensors used in automotive ABS and stability control systems are good examples of high-volume, mass produced items. For more demanding customers – such as machine builders creating complex industrial automation and motion control systems – sensor manufacturers have often relied on a more craft-based approach, with expert machinists building custom-designed products in in small batch quantities. These specialized items are more expensive than their mass-produced counterparts and usually take far longer to be delivered. However, for the specialist machine builder, getting instruments that meet their exact requirements can often be more cost-effective than adapting a not-quite-right unit.

POSITAL has broken down the “inexpensive but inflexible” vs. “customized but costly” divide by developing a new mass-customized approach to sensor design and fabrication. This approach centers on a highly modular device architecture. Sensing elements, controlling microprocessors, housings, communications interfaces, mounting hardware etc. are all designed to be – as far as possible – interchangeable modules. Thus, for example, if the buyer of a rotary encoder requires a POSITAL IXARC multi-turn magnetic encoder with a stainless-steel housing, IP67-rated seals, a 10 mm solid shaft and a CANopen communications interface, the technician responsible for assembling the device can simply select the appropriate sub-components from inventory and put them together. This approach means that FRABA can offer an extremely large number of possible variations on their basic sensor designs – over 135,000 models currently! Moreover, special configurations can be built and delivered quickly – usually within a few days of receiving an order.

FRABA’s modular approach to sensor fabrication is supported by a highly computerized manufacturing control system. Assembly technicians are provided with step-by-step instructions that guide them through the assembly process. (These instructions are in graphical form, which avoids communications problems with a multi-lingual workforce.) The production control system also tracks each item from the time an order is received, recording information about construction, QA testing, calibration and shipping.

Motion Control Automation – Successful Landing on Comet Chury!

Congratulations from maxon motor!

Maxon-Comet-Lander

Maxon Logo

Rosetta mission employs Swiss drive technology.

Today, the European Space Agency (ESA) successfully landed a small laboratory on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The lander features ten instruments which may provide important clues to the origin of life. Two DC motors made by drive specialist maxon motor are on board the mission

For the first time in the history of space exploration, scientists have access to substantial data from a comet’s surface. The European space probe Rosetta successfully guided its lander Philae to touch down on the four-kilometer Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, a.k.a. Chury. The Philae lander has a mass of 100 kg and features ten instruments.

maxon motor is proud to be part of this mission. The Swiss-based drive specialist provided two DC motors, with a diameter of 13 mm each. These motors will be used to lower the APXS instrument to the ground. The APXS is an alpha x-ray spectrometer, developed by the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz to be used to record the chemical composition of Chury and provide information on the presence of key elements such as carbon and oxygen

Traveling through space for more than ten years

Never before has a DC motor been exposed to vacuum for this long. However, the motors have now passed an initial motion test, which is a promising sign. The individual instruments on the lander will start being automatically activated in sequential order. Within a day or two, the micromotors will lower the APXS from the lander’s belly to the surface of the comet.

Maxon-Comet-Lander-2

The Rosetta project is expected to continue until the end of 2015, when Chury returns to the outer reaches of our solar system. Until then, researchers want to collect as much data as possible from the comet’s core and tail – and maybe answer the question of whether comets once brought water or even life to Earth.

Automation – Maxon Motor Takes Part in Chase to Catch Up with a Comet!

After more than ten years of travel through space, the European space probe Rosetta has reached the comet Chury. Three months from now, for the first time in the history of space travel, a lander will touch down on the surface of the four-kilometer-wide comet. DC motors manufactured by maxon are part of this pioneering feat.

Maxon motion control motors used in comet lander

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA -Application Story – Automation – On August 6th, the big day finally arrived: After a journey of more than ten years, the Rosetta space probe reached the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, known as “Chury”. The mission team at the European Space Agency (ESA) jumped for joy. For the first time in the history of space travel, a probe has rendezvoused with a comet. It will now orbit and map the comet and gather various types of data. Already, the first images received have yielded astonishing new insights: The comet Chury, which is four kilometers wide, is not round or oval, but instead looks like two rocks loosely stuck together. At minus 70°C, the surface is much warmer than expected and the first information indicates that it is covered with a black layer of dust.

First choice for space missions Rosetta will now gradually approach the comet, until a distance of only 10 kilometers separates them. The most difficult part of the mission will take place in mid-November 2014, when the Philae lander is scheduled to touch down on Chury. It will be the first controlled landing on a comet. A real pioneering feat – and maxon motor is part of it, with a DC motor on board. This is not the first time that the micro drives from Switzerland have been the first choice for space missions. SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which transports cargo to the ISS station, also contains maxon motors. The same holds true for the Mars rovers, which have been diligently traveling across the surface of the red planet for many years.
